MoreDBS Check
To work in care you must have a DBS check, this is a criminal records check and stands for Disclosure and Barring Service.
Before you start a job working in social care, your potential employer will apply to the DBS for a criminal records check prior to working with vulnerable adults.
You cannot apply for a DBS check yourself.
Some employers will pay for your DBS check, others may ask the potential employee to pay and reimburse once you have worked for a certain amount of time.

Update Service
Once you have your DBS certificate, it is advisable to register for the ‘Update Service’. This allows you to keep your details up to date and for other employers to check your certificate. It will also make your DBS ‘portable’ if you decide to move employer.
There is a charge for the ‘Update Service’ of £13 per year and you must register within 19 days of receiving your certificate. Click here to find out more.
